KLSC Swiss Workshop

Knowledge, learning and societal change

The aim of the workshop in Bern on 25 February 2011 was to identify the interest of the Swiss Science Community in the forthcoming IHDP core project Knowledge, Learning and Sociental Change (KLSC). Based on the outcome the academies will seek funding of a regional project office for KLSC.

Draft KLSC Science Plan: KLSC Swiss Workshop

The KLSC project aims to better understand and explain the interplay between actions, knowledge and learning so that steps can be taken to enable adaptation to changing conditions and help societies move in more sustainable directions. This goal can only be reached by involving a broadly based community in the project with people from the sciences, humanities, and social practice, including participation in knowledge production by those living in key affected areas.
Twenty participants, predominantly representing research, attended the workshop. Several other persons expressed an interest in the project without attending the workshop. At the beginning of the meeting, the workshop participants focused on the question of what the Swiss research community can contribute to the KLSC project and on the other hand, how Switzerland can benefit from the new project. The discussion showed that many projects are already running, particularly in the field of transdisciplinarity. The KLSC project is considered as a chance to bundle the research activities and to introduce them on an international level. This can increase the recognition of the importance of this kind of research within the Swiss institutions. It is crucial to include the whole spectrum of sustainability, but nonetheless to remain methodogically focused. It was suggested to build an Internet platform as a first step. The platform could serve as a marketplace for projects, including the names and addresses of contact persons. At a later stage, steps could be taken towards lancing a new National Research Program (NRP).
