How is the climate crisis affecting the alpine water resources? What will it take to ensure that we continue to have sufficient water as a habitat and resource in the future? These and other questions will be addressed at the Liechtenstein FutureForum Alps on 27 and 28 June 2025 in Schaan under the title “H2O: precious, powerful, scarce”.

The Alps are considered the “water castle of Europe”. As the source of many important rivers, they supply more than 170 million people throughout Europe. However, the three planetary crises – climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution – are putting increasing pressure on water bodies. Water availability is changing and conflicts of use are arising. More frequent droughts and heavy rainfall lead to debris flows and floods. Glaciers are melting and pollution from chemicals, microplastics and fertilisers is endangering aquatic habitats – and us.

At the international FutureForum Alps conference, participants can expect contributions on the effects of the climate crisis on the “Alpine water castle” and discussions on good examples and measures from science and practice. Workshops and presentations in small groups will allow participants to delve deeper into the topic of water. The programme offers an interdisciplinary exchange, networking opportunities and exciting excursions in Liechtenstein.

The Liechtenstein Future Forum Alps is under the patronage of the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein and is organised by CIPRA International and financially supported by the municipality of Schaan.
