Forum Floods '99

3. Februar 2000 in Bern

Lieu de l'événement

Bern

On 3 February 2000 a public forum was held in Bern about the state of the scientific evaluation of the floods in spring '99. The event attracted more than 200 participants from science, the government and politics. The following is a summary of some key statements made at the forum: The flood situation in May '99 was an extraordinary event with a return period of about 100 years. The situation was exceptional not because of a single event but because of the coincidence of several influencing factors - none of the various factors reached previously unknown proportions by itself. The floods were finally triggered by the two heavy rainfall events occurring at Easter and Whitsun. During the long warm period starting in mid-April the enormous snow masses had been melting fast. In connection with heavy rainfall in the northern Alps in April this soon lead to unusually high water levels in prealpine lakes and to an extensive saturation of the soils, which resulted in almost complete runoff of following precipitation. Also, the discharge rates of prealpine catchment areas were additionally increased by the melting water. However, the interaction between these influencing factors and their degree of importance varied in different regions.
A detailed investigation of the interaction between the different factors can be found in the publication «Ereignisanalyse der Hochwasser 1999» (BWG 2000), soon to be published.
