Election of the IPCC Chair
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) elected Hoesung Lee of the Republic of Korea as its new Chair.
Lee, aged 69, is professor in the economics of climate change, energy and sustainable development at Korea University’s Graduate School of Energy and Environment in the Republic of Korea. He is currently one of the IPCC’s three vice-chairs. Hoesung Lee was elected by 78 votes to 56 in a run-off with Jean-Pascal van Ypersele. A total of six candidates had been nominated for the position :

  • Ogunlade Davidson (Sierra Leone)
  • Chris Field (United States of America)
  • Hoesung Lee (Republic of Korea)
  • Nebojsa Nakicenovic (Austria and Montenegro)
  • Thomas Stocker (Switzerland)
  • Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (Belgium).
IPCC Vice Chairs:
IPCC elected Ko Barrett (USA), Thelma Krug (Brazil) and Youba Sokona (Mali) as IPCC Vice Chairs.

Co-Chairs of the IPCC Working Groups
The election took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where the IPCC is holding its 42nd Session. The following Co-Chairs are elected:

  • WG I: Valérie Masson-Delmotte (France) and Panmao Zhai (China)
  • WG II: Hans-Otto Pörtner (Germany) and Debra Roberts (South Africa)
  • WG III: Jim Skea (United Kingdom) and P.R. Shukla (India)
Vice-Chair of Working Groups:
Andreas Fischlin was elected as one of the Vice-Chairs of the IPCC Working Group II. Switzerland thus remains in the IPCC Bureau.

The new Bureau consists of 34 members includes the Chair, Co-Chairs of the IPCC Working Groups and the Vice-Chairs of the full report and the working Groups.
