Adaptation to health effects of climate change in Europe

Climate change has also negative effects on human health on account of heat(waves), infectious and communicable diseases, extreme events like floods and fires. The challenge, next to the reduction of greenhouse gas emission, thus is to adapt to inevitable consequences of climate change on the health sector, so as to strengthen its resilience in Europe.

To this end, the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors recommends, inter alia: to integrate human health into all climate change adaptation policies across all sectors and governance levels; to support the capacity and preparedness of the health sector as part of broader disaster and emergency risk strategies; and to design policies to support the most vulnerable social groups and geographical areas.

This Scientific Opinion of the seven Scientific Advisors aims to inform the European Green Deal, the European Climate Law and the EU Adaptation Strategy. The mandate of the Scientific Advisors is to provide independent scientific advice to the European Commission to inform its policy making. For this purpose, they work closely with the Academy consortium SAPEA (Scientific Advice for Policy by European Academies), which gathers expertise in engineering, humanities, medicine, natural and social sciences from over 100 academies across Europe.
